She was the daughter of George Heinrich "Henry" Dellinger and Katherine Setzer. She married George D. Whitener at Lincoln Co., North Carolina, on 23 September 1824. She was adjudged to be five years of age at the time. Leah was raised as a member of the George Davidson family, a prominent family on the North Carolina frontier.
