- "Samuel Mackie first entered military service as a volunteer militiaman in Burke Co., N. C. in February, 1780. He served as a dragoon in the mounted company of Captain Robert Patton of McDowell's Regiment. They marched through Mecklenburg Co. N.C. into S.C. to the outskirts of Charleston. As Charleston was brought under seige, they advanced to Monck's Corner, S. C. In a surprise early morning attack by the British, their forces were completely routed, losing camp equipage and baggage (April 14, 1780). They retreated to Nelson's Ferry, S. C., joining the N. C. Miitia of General William Caswell. Following the surrender of Charleston in May, 1780, he was discharged and returned home.
He volunteered again in July, 1780 in a light horse company commanded by Captain Samuel Woods of McDowell's Regiment. They were engaged in the skirmish at Cane Creek in Burke County, N. C. on September 12, 1780. In this affair they were scattered. He then followed the remnants of McDowell's troops into the Watauga Settlements, joining the combined forces of Colonels Campbell, Shelby, and Sevier. They recrossed the Blue Ridge Mountains and fought the Battle of Kings Mountain on October 7, 1780. He was discharged three weeks after this engagement.
His last tour of duty began in the winter of 1780. He served five weeks on the Catawba Frontier under Captain Daniel Smith of McDowell's Regiment. He was given his discharge by Major Joseph McDowell."
