P. Sinclair states that she has "learned he and his sister were born in VA, but lived in Rutherford County, NC prior to moving to Hall County, GA in 1830's." His CSA service record also states VA.

Gender Male Military From 5 Oct 1837 to 7 May 1838 Florida Seminole Indian War [3] Military - He served under Captain Abram Chastain in the 1st Regiment of Georgia Mtd. Volunteers, commanded by Col. E. W. Chastain, in the Seminole Indian War in Florida in 1837 and 1838. He enlisted at Hall County, Georgia for a term of six months and was honorably discharged at Campbell, Georgia.

The household includes one male age 30-40 (likely James, 26), one female 5 and under (first initial, M. - likely Martha Jane), one female 20-30 (likely Rhoda). All are free whites. The family is living next door to Frances (Winters) Quarles.
Census 1850 District 38, Hall, Georgia [4] - James Butler is enumerated as head of household. His age is given as 30 and his occupation as laborer. His birthplace is given as North Carolina. He cannot read and write. Other household members include "R" (likely Rhoda), age 25 and the following children: "M," age 11, female; "J. M.," age 6, male; "R," age 4, male; and "J. E." (likely James E,) age 1, male.

Physical Description 17 Jun 1861 Civil War [1] He is described as being six feet one inch tall, with a fair complexion and dark hair. FAN Levi Mote FAN William T. Wofford Military From 17 Jun 1861 to 6 Nov 1861 Civil War [1, 7] - James enlisted on 17 Jun 1861 in Adairsville, GA. He was mustered in at Camp McDonald as a private in Colonel Wofford's 18th Georgia Regiment, Company F. He spent at least 60 days in the hospital for nephritis and bronchitis. Due to these illnesses, he was declared unfit for duty and was discharged on 06 Nov 1861 at Camp Goldsboro, North Carolina.
Military From Bef 2 Sep 1864 to 15 Jun 1865 Civil War [1] Military - James re-enlisted and served in the 18th GA Infantry, Company H. On 02 Sep 1864, he was at Jackson Hospital in Richmond, VA and given a 30-day furlough to go to Atkins, GA [I can't find Atkins on a map]. He was captured in the hospital at Richmond, VA on 03 Apr 1865. He was transferred to Libby Prison in Richmond, then to Newport News, VA, where he was released on 15 Jun 1865.
His oath of allegiance card states that his residence is Andersonville, GA. Perhaps he was exchanged for a Yankee prisoner?
Illness 1872 [8] James had a stroke. Illness 6 Nov 1873 Milledgeville, Baldwin, Georgia [8, 9] He was admitted to the state lunatic asylum, from Bartow County. Died 5 Dec 1876 Milledgeville, Baldwin, Georgia [3] - Information regarding his admission to the asylum and subsequent death are from a letter from the Superintendent & Resident Physician of the "State Lunatic Asylum", on letterhead, that is included within the pension file.

James was raised in the household of his sister, Susannah, and her husband John Sullins from the time he was small. Presumably his parents died when he when he was a child.

Married 22 May 1871 , Lumpkin, Georgia [3] - 1. The pension file contains a certified copy (dated 09 Jul 1896) of the marriage license and certificate. The original is filed in Book D, Page 164.
2. This marriage was proven invalid through the course of the pension inquiry, due to the fact that James and Nancy (Rutledge) Floyd were never divorced.
