An old letter dated 2 Sep 1922 from Ed Anderson (a nephew of Peter Stroud) to John G. Stroud talked about the family. 463 "Robert Patton entered Revolutionary Service in Burke Co., N. C. and served as a militiaman under Captain William Morrison of McDowell's Regiment. He served as an Indian spy, or scout. Later he was commissioned captain of mounted troops. He served in this capacity throughout the remainder of the war. In 1777, Captain Patton and his company served on the Catawba Frontier, guarding against the Cherokees. In early 1780, during the actions in and around Charleston, he marched his mounted troops into S. C. joining the forces of Colonel William Washington and General Isaac Huger. They rendezvoused near Monck's Corner, S. C. The following morning, before daylight, in a surprise attack, they were badly beaten by the combined British forces under Colonel Banastre Tarleton, Major Patrick Ferguson, and Major James Webster (April 14, 1780). Later the remnants of the command regrouped at Nelson's Ferry, S. C. on the Santee River. They progressed to Camden, S. C., joining the units of General William Caswell and Colonel Charles McDowell. They marched on into N. C. to Cross Creek. Colonel McDowell along with Captain Patton proceeded westwardly to Mecklenburg County, joining the brigade of General Griffith Rutherford. Here they leaned [sic] of the Tory gathering near Ramsour's Mill and rapidly marched to that place, arriving there shortly after the battle of June 20, 1780.

Captain Patton later served with General Rutherford in the Camden Campaign. In September and October he took part in the Kings Mountain Campaign and battle, again commanding mounted troops (Oct. 7, 1780). He served under the McDowells in the Wilmington Expedition (Fall, 1781), and in the Cherokee raids of 1782."

478 "Samuel Mackie first entered military service as a volunteer militiaman in Burke Co., N. C. in February, 1780. He served as a dragoon in the mounted company of Captain Robert Patton of McDowell's Regiment. They marched through Mecklenburg Co. N.C. into S.C. to the outskirts of Charleston. As Charleston was brought under seige, they advanced to Monck's Corner, S. C. In a surprise early morning attack by the British, their forces were completely routed, losing camp equipage and baggage (April 14, 1780). They retreated to Nelson's Ferry, S. C., joining the N. C. Miitia of General William Caswell. Following the surrender of Charleston in May, 1780, he was discharged and returned home.

He volunteered again in July, 1780 in a light horse company commanded by Captain Samuel Woods of McDowell's Regiment. They were engaged in the skirmish at Cane Creek in Burke County, N. C. on September 12, 1780. In this affair they were scattered. He then followed the remnants of McDowell's troops into the Watauga Settlements, joining the combined forces of Colonels Campbell, Shelby, and Sevier. They recrossed the Blue Ridge Mountains and fought the Battle of Kings Mountain on October 7, 1780. He was discharged three weeks after this engagement.

His last tour of duty began in the winter of 1780. He served five weeks on the Catawba Frontier under Captain Daniel Smith of McDowell's Regiment. He was given his discharge by Major Joseph McDowell."
