    Birth:
    *Jan 1832, South Carolina -> stated on 1900 census
    *1830, South Carolina -> age 98 on death certificate
    *1835, South Carolina -> age 85 on 1920 census
    *1844, South Carolina -> age 36 on 1880 census
    *1846, South Carolina -> age 24 on 1870 census
    *1840, South Carolina -> age 20 on 1860 census
    *1841, South Carolina -> age 9 on 1850 census
    *1842, Cumberland County, S. C. -> age 20 when he enlisted in the CSA on 22 Mar 1862 [I can find a town called Cumberland, but no county in S. C.]
    *1837, SC -> age 73 on 1910 census

    [I'm concluding that the correct birth year is 1842. That's consistent with his CSA enlistment and his age on 1850 census (age 9 and age 18 would be too much of a stretch to mix up and he is listed in the correct order to be age 9). It also makes sense that the year would get off the older he got.]

    Census:
    Wm. W. (9) appeared in the household of Robert West (55). He was born in South Carolina. The household included Nancy A. (20), Anna M. (40), Catherine E. (16), Millberry (14), Robert (11), and Elizabeth J. (3).

    Census:
    William (20) appeared in the household of Robert West (60). He was born in South Carolina. Other household members included Nancy (24), Susanna (12), and James (2).

    [I'm not 100 % sure that this record refers to the correct family, but I believe it does based on these reasons.
    1) It says William was born in South Carolina, which is consistent for William throughout all other censuses.
    2) The head of household is Robert West, and William's death certificate reports his father's name as Robert.
    3) Robert, William, and Nancy are found District 5 of Polk County again in 1870.
    4) There are only 2 Robert Wests in Polk County in 1860 (which accounts for father and son), as well as only one William West and one Nancy West in Polk Co. in 1860.]

    Military:
    He enlisted in March 1862 in Company D, 3rd Tennessee Infantry, CSA and served as a private for about three years. He was a prisoner of war. He was captured at the Siege of Vicksburg on 04 Jul 1863 and paroled "according to the terms of capitulation entered into by the commanding Generals of the United States and Confederate forces July 4, 1863." He signed his oath of allegiance to the United States on 10 Jul 1863.

Other household members included his wife Caroline (18), daughter Catherine (2), son James M (10/12), and Abner Lankford (16), probably his brother-in-law.

    Residence:
    *Family appears to have moved from Tennessee to Georgia sometime between 1874 and 1876. Mary (age 6 on the 1880 census) was born in Tennessee and William (age 4 on the 1880 census) was born in Georgia.

    *William further states in his 1897 pension application that he had resided in Murray County about 22 years.

    Thomas Rudd named the children of Francis and Robert Kendrick in his will. These children would have been nieces and nephews (Thomas Rudd is Franky Rudd's brother). This fact, coupled with the fact that Francis and Robert had a daughter named Tempy and Thomas and Mahala also had a daughter named Tempy, have convinced me that Robert and Francis are indeed the parents of my Thomas Kendrick (born 1821). This also convinces me that Francis (Franky) Rudd is the daughter of Harwood (Herrod) Rudd.
